Somethingâs not right.
Something wakes her.
Sheâd been sleeping with a light on, just to be on the safe side, and she opens her eyes to the sight of the white wall from which sheâd removed the gruesome photographs.
She looks around and immediately springs to her feet. A shudder of terror grips her body. The door to her old room is open.
She pulls the improvised knife out of the folded towel sheâs using as a pillow and walks slowly towards the dark room. In the light penetrating the darkness, she can see that the bed is empty. She flips the switch and the room lights up. Handcuffs on the mattress. Clothes tossed on the floor. A towel⦠and a trail of wet footprints leading to the door.
The footprints go into the Images Room, step on her blanket, and end outside the door to the X-ray Room. She looks at the desk. The keys and notebook are gone. She runs to the door. Locked.
Heâs back in control.
For the first time since finding herself here, she canât hold back the tears. Sobs that had been locked inside her for four months burst forth, tears streaming down her face, her entire body shaking uncontrollably.
She weeps until she hears a noise from the cribs. Yoavi wakes up and is grumbling for attention in baby talk. She picks him up and holds him in front of her face, and he reaches out to her with both arms.
âThereâs no time for crying now.â The voice booms from the speaker, loud and metallic, ripping through the silence.
âPut the knife down. You donât want to hurt him.â
She hadnât noticed that the knife was still in her hand when she picked up the baby, and she places it on the desk. She looks up to try to locate the cameras she didnât know were there until then. He can see whatâs happening in every room. Heâd seen everything she did. The knife sheâd made. How sheâd waited for him with the can. The way she showers.
âWhat do you dream about?â the question echoes from the loudspeaker.
âGetting the hell out of here,â she whispers. Yoavi reaches out to touch her wet face with his little hand.
âNo, no. What do you dream about at night? Do you dream about walking and finding yourself in the same place over and over again? In the same dense forest? Walking in circles and tripping over that same branch on the ground again and again? Sprouting, growing, flowering, wilting, dying, rotting. Itâs a wheel that keeps turning, nonstop, and will keep turning forever until⦠Until we can make it different. More powerful. Stronger. Less quick. A symbol and continuation of God. Then another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems.â
She clasps Yoavi to her chest.
âI forgive your improper actions towards me. I, unlike you, uphold the rules of civilized conversation and behavior. Clean your room. Take the mattress into the Images Room.
